Buy a Highway Vignette for Austria

Austria Highway Vignette – Fast online purchase

In Austria, in addition to electronic vignettes, physical vignettes are also available, which must be affixed to the vehicle’s windshield in a clearly visible location. To ensure a secure journey, it is recommended to purchase the vignette in advance online at europe-vignette.eu.

The advantage of the e-vignette is that it does not need to be affixed to the windshield, as it is registered in the system using the vehicle’s license plate data. Additionally, online purchases allow for various payment options: bank card, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. The confirmation received via email allows you to check the validity of the vignette at any time.

Austria Vignette Information – Validity, Types and Prices

Austria has a well-developed road network, with the total length of motorways and expressways exceeding 2,000 kilometers. To use these roads, a toll must always be paid, which can be purchased as a highway vignette for passenger vehicles and motorcycles under 3.5 tons. For vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons, a toll called GO must be purchased.

Types of Highway Vignettes in Austria

As in most European countries, Austria offers highway usage permits with both short and long validity periods. When purchasing an e-vignette online, the following types are available:

1- Day Vignette Austria

The 1-day vignette is the highway vignette with the shortest validity period. As in other countries, it is valid for the calendar day of use and is accepted on all Austrian roads where a highway vignette is required.

The start of the validity period for the 1-day vignette depends on the time of purchase, during which you can specify whether it should become valid immediately or on any selected future date.

  • Same-Day Validity: If the start date of the vignette’s validity is set to the day of purchase, the vignette will be valid from the time of successful purchase confirmation until 23:59 on the same day.

Example: If a daily vignette is purchased on August 3 at 15:26, it will be valid from the time of confirmation until 23:59 on August 3.

  • Future-Date Validity: If the vignette’s validity start date is different from the purchase date, it will be valid from 0:00 (12AM) to 23:59 (11:59PM) on the selected calendar day.

Example: If you buy a 1-day vignette on June 16 and select June 25 as the start date, the vignette will be valid from 0:00 (12AM) to 23:59 (11:59PM) on June 25.

10- Day Vignette Austria

The 10-day Austria vignette is also valid on all highway sections in Austria where a vignette is required (excluding toll road sections). It can be purchased with two different starting validity options:

  • Same-Day Validity: If the validity starts on the day of purchase, it is valid from the time of successful purchase confirmation (first day), and for the following 9 consecutive calendar days, until 23:59 on the last day.

Example: If a 10-day vignette is purchased on July 10 at 12:23 (12:23PM), it will expire on July 19 at 23:59 (11:59PM).

  • Future-Date Validity: If a future date is selected as the start of validity on the day of purchase, the vignette will be valid from 0:00 (12AM) on the selected day (first day), and for 9 additional consecutive calendar days, until 23:59 (11:59PM) on the last day.

Example: If a 10-day vignette is purchased on June 16 and June 25 is selected as the start of validity, the vignette will be valid from 0:00 (12AM) on June 25 until July 4 at 23:59 (11:59PM).

2-Month Vignette Austria

The 2-month vignette is also valid on all Austrian highway sections where a vignette is required, making it a time-based highway vignette. However, purchasing the 2-month Austria vignette requires some advance planning. This is because this type of vignette can only be purchased for a future date, which can be no earlier than the 18th day after the date of purchase.

Why is the 2-month Vignette not valid immediately in Austria?

In Austria, the 2-month highway vignette cannot be purchased with immediate validity. This means it becomes valid no sooner than the 18th day after the purchase date.

The reason lies in European consumer protection regulations, which provide a standard 14-day withdrawal period. Consumers have 14 days to cancel a product or service purchased online. In the case of the vignette, an additional 4 days are taken into account to allow for postal delivery if a cancellation request is sent by mail.

Yearly Vignette Austria

Like the 2-month vignette, the yearly Austria highway vignette also cannot be purchased with immediate validity. It becomes valid no earlier than the 18th day after the date of purchase.

The Austria annual vignette is valid throughout Austria on all highway sections where a vignette is required. However, its validity is not for 365 days from the date of purchase. Instead, it follows a calendar-based validity: it is valid from December 1 of the previous year until January 31 of the following year at 23:59 (11:59 PM).

Toll roads in Austria

In Austria, highway usage requires the payment of a toll fee, which for passenger cars and motorcycles is covered by purchasing a vignette. This entitlement must always be acquired before entering a toll road.

In addition to roads requiring a vignette, certain alpine sections and tunnels require a separate route-based toll, which can be purchased as a single-use, double-use, or multi-use pass. These apply to the following sections:

  • A13 Brenner highway– the entire route,
  • A10 Tauern highway – between the Flachau and Rennweg junctions, including the Tauern and Katschberg Tunnels,
  • S16 Arlberg Expressway – between the St. Anton am Arlberg and Langen am Arlberg junctions,
  • A11 Karawanken highway – southbound direction only,
  • A9 Pyhrn highway – between the Spital/Pyhrn and Ardning junctions (Bosruck Tunnel), as well as between the St. Michael and Übelbach junctions (Gleinalm Tunnel).

Highway Vignette Inspection in Austria

The Austrian authorities verify the validity of highway vignettes using several methods:

  • Stop-and-check method conducted by a mobile inspection service
  • Automatic cameras
  • Fixed camera systems

The responsibility for toll enforcement in Austria lies with ASFINAG Service and Control Service (Service- und Kontrolldienst). They perform checks using both mobile patrols and fixed automated cameras. Approximately 100 mobile inspectors are active on Austrian roads, and they can stop drivers at random times and locations to verify whether a valid vignette has been purchased.

In addition to this, there are 9 fixed camera systems installed on highways across the country. These cameras identify whether a vignette is present or missing, based on the vehicle's license plate or physical vignette. The exact locations of these cameras are not always disclosed, as highway operators frequently change their positions every 7 to 14 days.

Vignette Penalties in Austria

In Austria, not only is the toll system well-established, but so is its enforcement. Attempting to use toll roads without a valid vignette is not worth the risk, as doing so can result in hefty fines.

It's important to note that penalties are not only imposed for missing vignettes, but also for damaged, unpunched, or tampered physical vignettes, which are considered invalid.

Vignette Purchase in Austria

In Austria, vignettes are linked to the vehicle's license plate and can be purchased in the following ways:

  • Online e-vignette purchase, available as a digital product,
  • At physical points of sale as a digital vignette, and
  • At physical points of sale as a physical sticker vignette, which must be affixed to the vehicle’s windshield.

Vignettes must always be purchased before entering a toll road, and the most efficient and convenient method is buying online.

When purchasing online, special attention must be paid to the correct entry of the following details:

  1. Select the correct category: passenger car, motorcycle, trailer, light truck, minibus, motorhome, or other.
  2. Enter the correct license plate details: this includes the country code (the country where the vehicle is registered) and the license plate number.
  3. Specify the correct validity period: whether you're buying a vignette valid on the day of purchase or for a future date, it’s essential to ensure before departure that your highway vignette is valid on the travel day.

Incorrectly entered data may result in a fine, as incorrect information means the vehicle is considered to be without a valid highway vignette. Therefore, it is essential to double-check all details during the purchase process.

After entering vignette details, you will need to provide personal information, which is important to ensure that the confirmation email, receipt, and invoice are sent to the correct email address.

Please note: Do not enter a toll road section without successful vignett confirmation!
